Top Secret

Take as many walks along the coast as you can. You’ll encounter hundreds of clandestine cliffs, secret picnic spots, and lagoons that seem to house more history than humans have known.

Origins

Owned by a well-known Portuguese family that the staff describes as “caring, and careful to preserve history first, above all,” Bela Vista has been one of Portimao’s most iconic hotels, although it has gone through a series of transformations from its earliest avatar as a private residence. When it was first converted in to a hotel in the 1930s, it was simple and affordable for most locals, much in line with most of the hotels on this side of the Algarve.

In 2012, in partnership with Relais Chateaux and with the help of famous interior designer Graça Viterbo, Bela Vista successfully re-invented itself as an uber luxurious, beach hotel. Its rooms are fitted with all the amenities any jet set traveler would desire. With a range of room categories – which correspond to beach view and room size – guests are treated to flawless service round the clock, and all the treats that come with a good life on the coast.

The Review

Bela Vista sits on one of Praia de Rocha’s many cliffs, with an activity-filled, beautiful beach at a safe but accessible distance. The carefully spaced palm trees that line the hotel’s exceptional and well enjoyed pool is possibly the first visual detail that hints at the hotel’s cornerstones: precise service and professional finesse.

From the moment guests check in at Bela Vista, great care is assured. Staff make themselves readily available, and are quick to help with things much beyond the realm of hotel service. Helped by this feeling that everything-is-well-taken care of, most guests find themselves relaxed enough to stroll down to one of Portimao’s many magical beaches dotted with story-filled caves. Time takes on its own form here, a feeling oiled by Bela Vista’s ever-ready poolside cocktails.

In the smooth-as-butter days that can be passed here, the steady emotional graph most guests will subscribe to is only likely to move abruptly (upwards) at meal times, when the hotel shows its sixth star. With delectable breakfasts – replete with mouth watering homemade madeleines – Bela Vista’s culinary staff reveals its expertise, which climaxes at dinner. Guests who try the tasting menu (especially ‘The Journey Through the Algarve’ option), curated by a Michelin star chef, are sure to leave the restaurant with a new, slightly drunken love for life: the food is art, the wine is exceptional, and the expertise is profound.
