The feeling of nature – its wildness and beauty – is ever present at Fernandez Bay. The property quietly nestles itself into the natural vegetation bordering the beach. Grains of sand carpet every surface, whether by chance or choice. The sea is always in view. From each cottage doorstep, the turquoise water peers through pathways of coconut and seagrape trees. The bathrooms are uniquely designed to create an indoor-outdoor effect. The walls tower but the ceiling opens to the sky. Overhanging trees provide added privacy and shade, but expose the bathroom to the outdoors.
From the moment you step inside this laid back resort, the ocean steals your attention. Its striking closeness is definitely one of the resort’s most loveable features, along with the family atmosphere that makes it feel like a home away from home, particularly for repeat guests. This is reinforced by the trust system. There aren’t any room keys, and the bar and boutique use an honour system. You make your own drinks and write up your own tabs.
The casual style of the resort is only interrupted by the regimented buffet dinner served promptly at 7.30 pm. Arrive promptly to enjoy the pre-set menu as there is only one sitting; if you miss it by mistake finding food elsewhere will be inconvenient and costly given how isolated the resort is.
A reminder of dinner time is the captivating sunset that retires below the watery horizon, making each night feel golden and glorious. After dinner the beach bar turns into a social hub, where you meet interesting people from around the world and interact with the resident owners and managers.
The resort provides paddle boards, kayaks, floats and snorkeling gear to explore the nearby cays and creeks. The water toys are really enjoyable to create your own adventure.
The sea will beacon you on the day you leave; you will wrestle with the idea of getting sandy and salty again, but you will likely succumb, because the beach is always calling at Fernandez Bay.
