Top Secret

The farmhouse dates back to 1036 and was at the time used for a variety of different purposes; to cultivate cereals, raise cattle, make wine from the orchard and work iron. This history is reflected in the hotel's design, where each room has been personally designed by the owners, with wrought iron ceiling lights, cow-hide rugs, and exposed stonework.

Origins

After stumbling upon an old farmhouse for sale while walking near their home, Spaniards Gema and Marti decided to buy the property and transform it into an idyllic Catalan country house hotel, which opened in 2015. During the building's restoration, the couple were careful to strike the perfect balance between keeping much of the original architectural features, while incorporating a contemporary style that makes the hotel feel luxurious.

The Review

Nestled in the foothills of the Catalonian mountains lies Hotel Vella Farga, an 11th century former farmhouse that has been renovated into a luxurious and idyllic guest house that is perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway.

The buildings, once used as a place to make iron and farm cattle, are steeped in history, but have been modernised to make the hotel feel contemporary and fresh. Each room has design at its focus, with chandeliers, orchids, and gold accents running throughout the interior. Alongside the modern touches there are nods to the hotel's history, with cowhide rugs, exposed wooden beams and original stonework featuring in each of the 13 spacious rooms.

The hotel's communal areas are large and extravagantly decorated, with an airy restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and a pair of medieval cellars now home to plush sofas and antique artefacts.

But it's outside where guests will be most impressed. Set deep in the lush countryside, surrounded by pine forests and olive groves, Hotel Vella Farga is tranquil and serene, with only birdsong and the sound of running water there to interrupt your thoughts as you lie next to the invitingly refreshing infinity pool. Guests that want to relax will love the peaceful setting, but more adventurous travellers will enjoy the network of walking trails nearby, with one that winds through the forest and crosses an old aqueduct.

The pay-off for being in such a secluded and rural location is the one-and-a-half hour drive from Barcelona, which is the closest airport - but the journey is a small price to pay for an escape from city life and the chance to relax in one of Catalonia's most tranquil spots.
