There is a refinement, timelessness and elegance to La Borde that is rare to find in this day and age.
Located a couple of hours or so from Paris (or closer if you have a helicopter!), La Borde is resplendent and glorious. What is most striking in this former 14th century castle is the gardens and grounds. You can get lost in the woodlands, be inspired by the architecturally magnificent Orangerie, visit the orchard or vegetable plot or simply lie by the swimming pool listening to birdsong reflecting on the sheer beauty of this place.
La Borde oozes history and refined glamour. The suites are all traditionally designed in the Burgundy style, with floor tiles from local Saint-Amande, original beams and traditional French furniture and fittings. This is juxtaposed by modern and luxurious amenities, such as L’Occitaine toiletries, Nespresso machines, huge beds and fine towels and bed linen. Step outside your bedroom and into the living rooms or Orangerie which are uniquely of a French aesthetic and are simply beautiful.
Marieke and Rik are your perfect hosts. From the moment of arrival where they are there to greet you (with their golf buggy for your luggage!), you will be constantly surprised by their local knowledge, warmth and humour. Passionate about where they live and what they have created, there is a genuine determination to provide guests with an ultimately luxurious experience. Marieke is your point of call for local knowledge about excursions and sites of interest and Rik is there ensuring you are experiencing all Burgundy Vinoteque has to offer! The seclusion, luxury and romance they create at La Borde is its most charming feature.
The dining experiences at La Borde are second to none. Breakfast features home-grown fruits, honey and juices along with freshly cooked pastries, local cheese and meats. Marieke will happily cook you up some delicious eggs from her own organically reared hens! For lunch and dinner, there are set menus which change daily and are also created using locally sourced ingredients. These can be enjoyed Al Fresco overlooking manicured lawns or in the fabulous dining room. Marieke is a famously brilliant chef bringing together typically French cuisine with flair and elegance. Rik will be there to guide you through the extensive wine list and make you feel at ease.
Whilst good food, a fantastic location and exemplary service are effortlessly provided to the highest standards, the facilities at La Borde are also an equal match. There is a huge swimming pool overlooking the French countryside, a Turkish bath, a sauna, a jacuzzi and even a Massothermie machine. Marieke assures us that many previous guests have fired their masseuse in place of this Austrian massage invention! If you’re feeling energetic, you can use the tennis court, the gym or take out some bicycles for a short trip into the heart of Burgundy countryside. There is so much to offer in this region, from wine-tasting in neighbouring Chablis, historic castles of interest and even a local ceramics village. Marieke will provide you with an itinerary suited to your individual needs and organise transport if it’s required.
If you can close your eyes and imagine a place where time stands still and you are at ultimate peace, it can only be at La Borde.
