Top Secret

The luxurious Thalassotherapy Spa, complete with heated salt-water pool and retractable glass roof is possibly the most relaxing spa we have ever experienced. The communal areas are reserved for spa guests only, meaning you feel like you are in your own private retreat. Only upon being welcomed for your treatments, do you discover the underground labyrinth of tailored treatments rooms, cleverly designed to indulge oneself in the wondrous treats on offer.

Origins

The beautiful whitewashed stone buildings which centre around a 15th century building, used by the Knights of Malta as a watch-tower against Saracen’s attacks were first purchased by the owners as a holiday home to enjoy with their children and friends. Only once their children grew up, did they create this beautiful hotel. Great effort has gone into maintaining the history and natural beauty of the property, which blends in perfectly with the peaceful landscape.

The Review

Driving up the tree-lined path to Masseria San Domenico, is nothing short of spectacular. Within the first few moments of being shown around the beautiful property, the gardens create a party of the senses whilst the fresh air and peacefulness creates the sense of tranquility. We were welcomed to our beautifully appointed room, with classic Italian elegant décor, a sumptuous bed, thoughtful lighting and a basket of delicious local fruits to enjoy on the sun loungers in our own private garden. Despite the bedroom being a sanctuary, it couldn’t keep us away from the iconic free-formed swimming pool and jacuzzi, of which we had been dreaming of, leading up to this stay. Only at sundown were we able to pull ourselves away from the beautiful communal areas, to get ready for dinner.

Despite the hotel being almost at capacity, throughout our stay, Masseria San Domenico felt wonderfully private. Dinner, like all meals at the property, was a delicious delight. We thoroughly enjoyed the local aperitifs recommended by the charming staff alongside the pre-dinner nibbles including their home-grown olives, whilst watching the sun go down from the terrace. The chef displayed a wide range of culinary skills and showcased both Puglian dishes as well as modern and daring fare, from locally sourced produce.

After a heavenly sleep in those sumptuous sheets, we enjoyed healthy and nutritious breakfast in the sunshine before indulging in the Thalassotherapy Spa for the day, basking in the sun shining through the open roof over the heated-saltwater pool. The therapists indulged us in three different and unique Thalasso treatments, expertly guiding us from one to the next allowing us to maintain a deeply relaxed meditative state. The treatments utilised salt, seaweed and mud, all packed with vast concentrations of minerals and vitamins which combined with the sea water drawn from deep underground stratum, sitting 400 metres below sea level, was nothing short of exceptional.

Despite the region and area surrounding Masseria San Domenico, having a lot to offer – we found it near-impossible to leave this beautiful haven and we cannot wait to return.
