Origins

The Coleridge opened its doors in 2017 after two years of renovation. The building itself dates back over 400 years and is a traditional limestone townhouse typical of those built in Valletta during the 17th century. Together,, Trevor and Natasha have skilfully enriched the historical building with furniture and antique pieces whilst carefully ensuring the original features of remain – even the interior doors are originals and date back to the times of the Knights (a part of Malta’s history you must discover during your visit!). The hotel was named after the British poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who lived nearby from 1804 to 1805, and each room is named after a character from one of Coleridge’s sonnets.

The Review

Way back in 1565, under the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Malta’s famous knights set about establishing a city ‘built by gentlemen, for gentlemen’. Taking inspiration from their Italian neighbours across the Mediterranean and the Baroque fashions of the time, as well as influences from previous ruling nations (including Phoenicians, Greeks Romans and Arabs) the tiny city of Valletta was established as a settlement. In the subsequent years, a beautiful, culture-rich city has developed, packing in over 320 monuments into just 55 hectares.

A stone’s throw from both Valletta’s main square and the coast, The Coleridge is ideally situated as a a perfect base from which to explore the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City. Located just 15 minutes from Malta’s international airport, in the heart of its capital city, the hotel is easy accessible and provides a luxurious, spacious and comfortable getaway where guests are warmly welcomed and well looked after.

During the hotel’s redevelopment, the owners focused on preserving the fabric of the building as well as maximising comfort and space – in fact the hotel prides itself on having the largest rooms on the island. Each room has stunning, unique designs featuring bespoke murals, exceptionally comfortable beds and hand-chosen original antiques lovingly restored. Everything about these suites exudes luxury and elegance. Each room is also kitted out with contemporary-designed bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities, WiFi and IPTV, with over 6,500 channels to choose from.

Breakfast at The Coleridge is served in their limestone-walled, Maltese marbled floor cellar, which was only discovered by chance when digging down to build a lift and a keystone of an arch was exposed. This also revealed a well, which means they now have a sustainable source of water – a real bonus for the hotel which takes their eco-responsibility seriously. Breakfast consists of a delightful buffet or locally sourced organic meat, cheeses, Maltese pastries and fresh fruit. Warm and attentive staff at The Coleridge go over and above to help in any way they can, ensuring guests feel special and well-tended to.

The Coleridge Hotel is the perfect base for couples seeking exceptionally comfortable and spacious rooms with strikingly elegant designs whilst exploring a beautiful and historic city and beyond.
