Top Secret

Ask Ivan or one of his staff to talk you through the history of the building itself. The building is 111 years old and tales of riches, intrigue and foreign powers abound! The excellent Library is well stocked with books about George Town’s history and Malaysian culture – what better location to read about the local history than in one of the best-preserved colonial buildings in town?

Origins

Once the mansion of a prominent local family, The Edison has been lovingly restored to its former glory after the best part of half a century as an iconic but rundown hotel. It now stands as a proud and magnificent reminder of the wealth and excess of George Town in its heyday. Retaining many original turn-of-the-century features such as double height doors and wooden shutters, the hotel pays homage to its own past whilst achieving a sleek, modern look that appeals to modern aesthetics.

The Review

The Edison will impress every guest with its gorgeous colonial décor and the warmth of its staff. No expense has been spared in the faithful restoration of this impressive colonial mansion to its former glory. Each ground-floor room benefits from double-height ceilings and hand-picked designer furniture which is at once modern and yet compliments the period surroundings.

One of the focal points of the hotel, the all-day Lounge, is an innovative addition. The Edison wants to encourage all its guests to experience as much of George Town as possible, and in this city that is famed for its gastronomic experiences, there is no need for a full-service kitchen. So The Lounge was created, to provide all-day complimentary refreshments and a communal space for continental breakfasts and daily wine-tasting happy hours.

Walking around the hotel, guests will want to snap Instagram-worthy shots at every corner. The internal courtyard features striking Victorian cast iron pillars; the natural light in the Library makes it an ideal spot to enjoy a cold beverage whilst browsing through the hotel’s comprehensive book collection on Malaysian history and culture.

Surprisingly for a heritage hotel of this size, there is an outdoor pool and plenty of outdoor seats for those who do not mind the heat. The Cabana spaces near the pool can also double as private areas for gatherings or even meetings.

The Edison oozes colonial character and charm, and gives guests a chance to experience the Penang of old whilst being cocooned in modern designer luxury.
