The first settlers on the Island were fishermen and sea traders of Chinese and Malay origin. They chose this paradise island for its natural beauty and wealth of natural resources. It is said that the word ‘Samui’ comes from the Chinese ‘Saboey’, meaning ‘safe haven’.
The first western travellers arrived on Koh Samui in the early 1960’s, many of whom considered themselves to be ‘hippies’. They stopped here on their way to Kathmandu, trying to find enlightenment.
