The hotel has a private spot where romantic dinners can be arranged complete with fresh flowers, candlelight and food served from Esperisma. The hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant serves seasonal, local fare – think fresh seafood and the best homemade falafel you’ve ever had.
The hotel was expanded in 2016, with four new suites added for the 2017 season, creating two contrasting styles of room. The original six contemporary suites are light and bright with white-washed wood, while the new cave suites, designed by Yiannis Tzortzos, are decorated in neutral stone and beige tones.
When neighbouring hotel guests fly drones out to capture shots of your view, you know it doesn’t get much better. Santorini is famed for its perfect sunset views of the ocean and caldera, and at Athina Suites guests have quite the envy-inducing front row seat.
Set a healthy walk down winding steps from the island’s main town of Thira, Athina is a short drive from the local airport and then a brisk descent on foot down winding cobblestone steps to the hotel. The bellboys here seriously earn their tips.
Once settled, the place to be during the day is by the pool, reclining on a pristine white lounger for two and gazing out to sea through a cleverly-designed glass wall.
Being walking distance from Thira, most guests take advantage of the chance to venture into town to check out the many cafes, restaurants and shops. But to explore more of the island - like the must-see picturesque Oia - quad bikes can easily be rented locally.
Just be sure not to miss breakfast. At Athina it is served daily on your own terrace and cooked to order with everything from eggs, fruit, cereal and yoghurt to fresh juice and homemade cake on the menu. For dinner move up to the hotel’s restaurant Esperisma and get there in time to take in the stunning caldera views and sunset – with a sundowner in hand of course.
Rooms come with all the mod cons like Nespresso machines and speedy wifi, but pick a room with a private outdoor Jacuzzi or plunge pool if you want extra privacy to admire that view.
