The private plunge pool in the Grand Honeymoon Suite is the stuff of dreams. Set into the cave, it’s completely secluded and has some of the best views of the caldera.
When manager Theodore’s father bought the property in 1987 as a summer holiday home, it was used to press grapes and store wine. At that time there were no hotels in the area, nor even any buildings closer than 200 meters. After many years, in 2016, they decided to turn their loved home into a boutique hotel, and with two engineers and a decorator in the family were well set up to do so!
From the moment you arrive at Cocoon Suites, any and all worries instantly melt away. Nestled at the base of Imerovigli village, down steep and winding stone stairs, the enchanted cave-like boutique hotel is the perfect place to unwind.
With nine exclusive suites each offering private plunge pools with uninterrupted views of the stunning caldera, it encapsulates “barefoot luxury” at its very best. The staff are warm, welcoming, and attentive, whilst also hugely respectful of guests’ desire for privacy. For most of our stay we barely changed out of swimsuits or put anything on our feet - we felt perfectly at home.
Each villa suite has it’s own balcony area, where we enjoyed an unbelievable breakfast spread each morning overlooking Santorini’s striking sea views. They are individually decorated with unique details, creating an intimate atmosphere, with natural materials like rocks and driftwood. Elegant, stylish simplicity is dressed in soft tranquil tones while also providing all the modern unpretentious comforts you’d hope from a hotel of this standard. Toiletries are organic and local, complimentary bathrobes are standard, and every night chocolates were left by our bedside – a beautiful, thoughtful touch.
The restaurant, which opened this year, serves excellent Greek cuisine with a decidedly modern twist. Using local and regional ingredients, the chefs produce memorable meals that are perfectly paired with their (also local) wine list.
Really you need never leave, but if you’re so inclined to explore, the hotel will happily arrange a rental car and there’s much to see – from the churches, to the village of Oia, to the volcanic beaches on the opposite side of the island.
