Marlies and Jorg spent years searching for the perfect location for a luxury safari lodge. In the end, they themselves were found by an agent acting for the previous owners of the site, which featured in HATARI, John Wayne and Hardy Kruger film from 1962. With boundless energy and vision they not only developed the lodge and its related activities but also work with local government to promote sustainable tourism in the region.
Located between the two great Tanzanian mountains, the iconic Kilimanjaro and the stunning Mt Meru, it is immediately clear that Hatari Lodge has made a concerted effort to coexist with, rather than replace, the environment.
The setting on the boundary of Arusha National Park is at once dynamic and supremely relaxing. Guests experience the highlights of nature at close quarters, with monkeys and buffalo frequently venturing right up to the lodge, but comfort is never compromised. From the moment on arrival when guests are personally welcomed by the manager and a glass of fresh watermelon juice, the service is exemplary. The locally trained staff are attentive yet discreet and they are available for help at all time of the day. At all times, you get the feeling that you are a welcome part of the Hatari family, and this is reinforced by the card on your bed, signed by each of the employees. The food is also simply outstanding. All ingredients are locally sourced, and there is an impressive diversity of flavours in the meals. Further, the menu changes every couple of months. Each meal is balanced and nutritious – a magnificent culinary experience in the middle of the bush.
All in all, Hatari offers a luxurious and relaxing start or finish to a safari holiday, with the flexibility to suit any needs you may have. In particular, the viewing platform is special; an ideal place for contemplation, meaningful conversations and proposals.
