Be sure not to miss the opportunity to try palinka, the local fruit brandy; not for the faint hearted, it offers a warming kick followed up by a smooth and fruity sweetness.

When Oliver and Birgit left their city lives in search of some different, they found Homoki Lodge, a disused farm building with no electricity or running water. Utilising his skill as an architect, Oliver’s gentle approach to restoration has reinvigorated the lodge, and established Homoki as a must-see for those seeking a rural retreat without compromising on comfort.

The Review

Tucked away in the picturesque plains of Southern Hungary, Homoki Lodge offers a unique setting where you can escape the hustle and bustle of inner-city life. The mix of hotel rooms, main lodge and luxury yurts sit neatly off a sand track –where the resort takes its name from, Homoki meaning sand –and are sympathetically decorated with traditional trinkets.

Although primarily designed for those who wish to gallop freely as the Magyars did thousands of years before them, there’s plenty more for those who do not wish to spend their days on horseback. Take an off-road safari to the water buffalo reserve, try your hand at archery or relax with one of the many available beauty treatments. The staff will be happy to help you plan your perfect break.

Each day, the menu serves a modern take on Hungarian dishes, made from quality local ingredients including fresh salads and vegetables, hand-picked by the Chef from the lodge’s gardens. One particularly special experience is the goulash. Cooked over an open fire it’s everything you’d expect of this well-known dish, warm, welcoming and even with a touch of local custom–all guests are invited to taste the stew ahead of serving. The wine list is extensive, allowing you to discover the charms of Hungarian wine, not commonly exported to the UK.

Combining alfresco dining, a touch of luxury and plenty of options for those who wish to be a little more active, Homoki is an excellent backdrop to discover Hungarian food, culture, and scenery rarely experienced by holiday makers who flock to the big city.
