Kasbah Tabelkoukt is just a few minutes’ drive outside the village of Mirleft on the south eastern coast of Morocco – a spot that has historically been popular with musicians and artists, surfers and explorers, and also marking a stopping-off point for those who have just completed a journey over the Sahara. The local scenery is ruggedly beautiful, with undulating hillsides giving way to sandy coves where the land meets the sea.
Kasbah Tabelkoukt is the brainchild of Nicole Arbousset, who captures the free-spirited charm of the region via the hotel’s elegant, vintage-infused interiors. Designed in a neoclassical style, the new architecture pays homage to the history and culture of the region with its powerful, fortress-like form. The décor within draws upon the glamour of the 1930s, curating Orientalist art elements with green-blue bejmat tiles, carved doors, and a four-pillar central fireplace.
Each of Kasbah Tabelkoukt’s rooms is decorated in a different style, further underlining the love and care that has been taken over the interiors, and showcasing the distinctive character that shines throughout this property – there is an African room, an Art Deco room, and a Fez room, among others. Guests are invited to make themselves at home here, with communal areas such as a library filled with books from all around the world. An open-air terrace next to the infinity pool offers the ideal spot to watch the sun go down over the North Atlantic Ocean.
The Kasbah sits on top of a towering cliff, overlooking a deserted beach below. Known locally as la plage sauvage, or the wild beach, it is accessible via a private stairway directly from the Kasbah. An ocean-facing on-site hammam is another highlight of Kasbah Tabelkoukt – here, guests can book in rejuvenating treatments such as an argan oil massage or a black soap crepe scrub. Lunch and dinner can be arranged to be served in the dining area, crafted using local produce and classic Moroccan flavours. Packed lunches are available for day trips too.
This romantic setting is ideal for couples or honeymooners, but also suitable for families, with a diverse array of activities available to keep guests entertained. The hotel’s staff can arrange anything from on-site cookery courses and massages to adventurous options like trekking, horse-riding, paragliding, surfing, and scuba diving. Despite its deceptively remote-feeling setting, Kasbah Tabelkoukt is remarkably well-connected for exploring – the Spanish Art Deco architecture of Sidi Ifni is half an hour’s drive away, while the famous palm groves and silver jewelry of Tiznit can be reached in 50 minutes.
