Top Secret

Spitbank Fort has its own exclusive artesian well, tapping into an aquifer that sources its naturally filtered water from nearby France. In true British style, this aptly named ‘Spitwater’ has been quenching thirsts on the fort for 150 years.

Built as a result of the Royal Commission in 1859 to defend the Solent, Spitbank Fort has been declared a Scheduled Ancient Monument since 1967. Following major refurbishments in 2012, Spitbank is home to a lovingly restored luxury hotel that offers guests a decadent taste of the fort’s magnificent history.

The Review

Rising out of the Solent strait, Spitbank Fort offers guests a truly unique opportunity: to stay aboard a luxury sea fort that exudes both heritage and charm. With a commanding view around the bay, Spitbank brings together enthusiasts for history, opulence and fun that all combine into an unforgettable experience.

This extraordinary monument provides the exclusive privilege to explore and enjoy a wonderfully restored piece of British military history. From the secretive basement Bolt Hole to the fort-crowning Lighthouse, Spitbank is nothing short of a marvel, masterfully highlighting the original features of the fort’s architecture. Curving Victorian brick arches, snug powder magazines and sweeping cannon decks are all lovingly returned to their former grandeur.

Though the fort pays homage to the harder days of maritime defence, today’s guests are treated to an array of luxury facilities including a sauna and treatment room, wine cave, games floor, Crow’s Nest bar and fishing platform. Each unique suite is brimming with elegance and character, offering unrivalled seaward views through your own private porthole.

Whether dining in the Officer’s Mess or indulging in a Champagne sabrage on top-deck, service is impeccable with its own sprinkling of British wit and style. Fort Manager Kyle and staff are on hand for all needs from the moment you step on board, and are a treasure trove of Spitbank trivia for the curious.

Guests are offered much more than a restful stay, enjoying a true experience and an adventure into a fascinating history. Unmistakeably British and unreservedly unique, Spitbank Fort is a spectacular showcase of 21st century design bringing the past to life.
