Top Secret

The Athenaeum has long been associated with Hollywood A-listers including Steven Spielberg, John Wayne, Robert Redford, Muhammad Ali and countless others. It is said that Russell Crowe was once gently reprimanded for leaving his room grossly untidy.

Origins

Back in 1850, 116 Piccadilly started its life as Hope House, the private home of MP Henry Hope. Four decades later, the Athenaeum and its neighbouring Victorian townhouses were taken over by The Rank Organisation. The company renovated the apartments into an iconic hotel to house its movie stars when they were filming at London’s famous Pinewood and Ealing studios.

The Review

This five-star, family-owned art-deco hotel is situated in the heart of Mayfair and faces right onto Green Park. Well-known in the Seventies and Eighties as a hotspot for the rich and famous, but what literally sets this hotel apart from others in the area today is the hotel’s vertical living wall. Recently refurbished to the highest possible standard, expect velvet sofas, marble bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows, ESPA toiletries, and the fluffiest of robes and soft slippers.

The hotel itself feels like a home away from home. Since the Athenaeum is a family-run hotel, they know a thing or two about what children and their parents need, including interconnecting rooms for families. There is a dedicated ‘Children’s Concierge’ service on-hand to sort out those added extras that really make a difference to children. Everything from providing the little one’s favourite toys and films, to making sure milk and biscuits are waiting at bedtime. For busy parents who need a night off, the hotel has a fantastic team of babysitters on standby.

Step inside the hotel’s ‘The Bar’ and you can enjoy afternoon tea against the backdrop of garden walls. Or, escape to ‘The View’ on the top floor for a complimentary drink and snack from 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm. Dinner at ‘Galvin’ is a must, the hotel restaurant, run by Michelin-starred brothers Chris and Jeff has recently been awarded a second rosette.

Just an eight-minute walk takes you to St James's Park where you can feed the ducks (ask Kim at reception for free bird food). The hotel also offers complimentary kids scooters and kites that you can take to explore the parks. Don’t forget to wave at the Queen as you pass Buckingham Palace on your way!
